Operation & Maintenance Technologies for LNG Terminals


Tokyo Gas pioneered LNG’s introduction to Japan more than 50 years ago. LNG terminals have to be highly safe and reliable, and also help reduce the cost of production of city gas. Our years of knowledge and experience in the field have given us extensive technological expertise in operation and maintenance, and new and reassigned personnel are specially trained to ensure this expertise is put to active use. We are running terminals with high levels of safety and low running costs by continuously improving our operation and maintenance standards.

1. Basic education

Whether fresh out of college or reassigned from other positions, Tokyo Gas gives person starting work at its terminals a core technical education in LNG. This includes the following components:

  • Basics of LNG
  • Overview of LNG terminals and facilities
  • Basics and overview of operations
  • Basics and overview of facility maintenance
  • Field visits to LNG terminals

2. Operation technologies

In-depth training focusing on how terminals are operated is provided to people with little experience of city gas production operations at LNG terminals. This mainly takes the form of on-the-job training in the use of actual equipment at terminals and site patrols, and is supplemented by off-the-job training using simulators and instruction in empirical know-how, key monitoring points when abnormalities occur, and other practical topics. Specific training is provided in:

  • Methods of operating facilities and equipment
  • Methods of developing operating manuals
  • Operation management
  • Quality control
  • Site patrol

3. Facility startup technologies

Tokyo Gas has built, modified, and upgraded numerous facilities over the course of its long involvement in operating terminals, giving it extensive experience and expertise in their safe and efficient startup. Concrete areas of expertise include:

  • Overall planning
  • Ship allocation and other outside coordination
  • Optimization of purging and cooldown
  • Optimized startup sequencing
  • Planning of test runs

4. Facility maintenance technologies

LNG terminals contain storage tanks, heat exchangers, rotating machinery, and many other LNG facilities. While recommended inspection methods, cycles, and other maintenance procedures are provided by their manufacturers, their differing specific installation environments and operating conditions mean that the manufacturers’ recommendations are not always the most cost-effective. With its long experience in operating and maintaining LNG facilities, Tokyo Gas has produced the following standards to ensure maintenance is efficiently tailored to each type of facility and equipment is kept in good condition:
