Resetting Your Meter

These are instructions for resetting gas meters used extensively in homes.

The gas meter will automatically shut off the gas when it suspects an irregularity in gas usage or detects an earthquake magnitude 5 or greater. If all gas appliances are unusable, the gas meter will need to be reset (resetting makes gas usage possible once again). However, this procedure varies depending on the type of gas meter. See below for details.

Regular microcomputer meter

These are the meters used extensively in homes.

Main gas meter locations

Home gas meters

  • Inside the meter box
    Inside the meter box next to the front door or found in the common hallway
  • Outside in a row
    Outside in a row (with apartment number stickers)

How to open a meter box

  • Push-button type: Push the button to release the latch, then pull the latch toward you.

  • Ring-lever type: Lift the ring lever and turn it clockwise.
    Ring-lever type: Lift the ring lever and turn it clockwise.
  • Locking type: Insert the key to open. Meter box keys are often in the building manager’s custody, so please ask where the key is kept.

Reset procedure (when you don't smell gas)

NB/JB/KB/LB/AB gas meters

1. Turn off all gas appliances

*Don't forget the gas appliances outside.

Return the handles to their starting positions.

2. Take the cap off of the reset button

Turn and remove it. Leave the gas meter tap open.

3. Firmly press the reset button all the way in and slowly release it

After the red light comes on, it will start to blink.
*Sometimes the light does not come on.

Wait two seconds. Slowly release.

4. Wait three minutes before using the gas

When the light stops blinking, you can use the gas. If nothing changes, repeat from step 1.

Wait 3 minutes

If you still are unable to use gas, contact Tokyo Gas Network.

Reset procedure (when you don't smell gas)

NI meters

1. Turn off all gas appliances

*Don't forget the gas appliances outside.

Return the handles to their starting positions.

2. Firmly press the reset button all the way in and slowly release it

After the red light comes on, it will start to blink.
*Sometimes the light does not come on.
*Please call the Customer Center if the light does not start to blink.

Leave the gas meter tap open.

3. Wait two minutes before using the gas

When the light stops blinking, you can use the gas. If nothing changes, repeat from step 1.

Wait 2 minutes

If you still are unable to use gas, contact Tokyo Gas Network.

Reset procedure (when you don't smell gas)

JO meters

1. Turn off all gas appliances

*Don’t forget the gas appliances outside.

Return the handles to their starting positions.

2. Firmly press the reset button all the way in and slowly release it

Leave the gas meter tap open.

3. Wait one minute before using the gas

When the Gas dome (Gas Stopped) sign disappears, you can use the gas. If it doesn't disappear, repeat from step 1.

The 'Gas Dome' (Gas Stopped) sign will disappear shortly after the L appears. The 'Gas Dome' (gas stopped) sign will reappear.

Reset procedure (when you don't smell gas)

UH meters

1. Turn off all gas appliances

*Don’t forget the gas appliances outside.

Return the handles to their starting positions.

2. Firmly press the reset button all the way in and slowly release it

*Some LCD screens may look a little different.

Leave the gas meter tap open. The 'Gas Dome' (gas stopped) sign will disappear and the L will appear. Both the 'Gas Dome' (gas stopped) sign and the L will display.

3. Wait three minute before using the gas

When the Gas dome (Gas Stopped) sign disappears, you can use the gas. If it doesn't disappear, repeat from step 1.

After 3 minutes

If you still are unable to use gas, contact Tokyo Gas Network.

Reset procedure (when you don't smell gas)

Resetting NB/NS meters (No. 10 or 16)

1. Turn off all gas appliances

This includes outdoor gas appliances (water heaters, air conditioners, etc.).

Return the handles to their starting positions.

2. Take the cap off of the reset button

Turn counterclockwise to remove.Leave the gas valve open.

3. Firmly press the reset button all the way in and slowly release it

After the red light comes on, it will start to blink.
*Sometimes the light does not come on.

Wait two seconds.Slowly release.

4. Wait 3 minutes before using gas

When the light stops blinking, you can use the gas. If nothing changes, repeat from step 1.

Wait 3 minutes.Replace the cap

If you still are unable to use gas, contact Tokyo Gas Network.

Reset procedure (when you don't smell gas)

Resetting NS meters (Nos. 25–120)

1. Turn off all gas appliances

This includes outdoor gas appliances (water heaters, air conditioners, etc.).

2. Take the cap off of the reset button

Leave the gas valve open.Turn counterclockwise to remove.

3. Firmly press the reset button all the way in and slowly release it

After the red light comes on, it will start to blink.
*Sometimes the light does not come on.

The display will show “99” and begin counting down.

4. Wait 3 minutes before using gas

You can resume using gas after the display shows and the light stops flashing. If this does not occur, repeat the procedure from step 1.

Wait 3 minutes
