Background and purpose
At Tokyo Gas, we have sought to increase energy awareness among our customers by using various demonstration projects as opportunities to explore different ways of presenting gas and energy usage data, as well as of offering energy-saving advice, to customers. In the course of these projects, a great many customers expressed in interest in learning about energy-saving approaches which match their individual situations. Thus, we have accumulated insights required to provide energy-saving advice tailored to the actual household energy usage of our customers based on collection of data concerning the electrical appliances and number of people in the household. Accordingly, we developed an energy-saving advice service, which was made available free of charges to all our myTOKYOGAS members (our member website) from October 2016.
Development of energy-saving advice service: Overview
Our energy-saving advice service was developed as a free service for myTOKYOGAS (our member website), and offers a range of information such as energy-saving rankings, energy transparency, and energy-saving advice tailored to actual energy usage. The information is provided on a regular basis, updated four times per year in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Overview of how energy-saving advice is generatedThe service automatically combines energy data collected from household electricity smart meters and gas meter readings with information about customer households’ residential format and number of people, and analyzes this to compile energy-saving advice that is optimized for the households of individual customers. The customized energy-saving advice for each customer household can be accessed on the myTOKYOGAS website.

Overview of energy-saving advice screen information
Customers can confirm their energy-saving ranking and other information on the homepage of the energy-saving advice service. To allow for comparison with similar households, the website divides customers into groups based on previously registered information such as residential format (detached house or housing complex) and the number of people in the household, and shows rankings by group after conversion to 100 people and in descending order by lowest amount of energy usage.

The detailed information screens allow customers to confirm gas and electricity rates, consumption, energy-saving advice and other information. Based on analysis of customers’ household type, utilized appliances and electricity usage by time period, they offer seasonal energy-saving advice tailored to actual energy usage at each customer household.

In order to further raise energy awareness among customers, we will continue to improve our energy-saving advice service as well as work to expand the range of services we offer enabling customers to enjoy a more energy-saving lifestyle.
